GARY HERRING HUNT

Bahati Adventures:

Friends ask me what hunting Mozambique was like and I have a short answer, "Best damn two weeks of my adult life". I used several years worth of adrenaline in 14 very short days. As to my biggest mistake? Not staying longer and shooting twice as much: 10 animals and 8 species just wasn't quite enough.

Usually every hunt has more than it's fair share of disaster and delay stories, but I don't have a single one worth telling from this trip and that is a testament to the planning and effort that you guys put into making this a quality experience for your clients. However, there was no shortage of great hunting stories, incredible pictures, world class food, and lifetime memories and friendships made.

I had the good fortune to hunt with three of your PHs and they are all world class professionals; each bringing their own unique stalking tactics and knowledge of the local terrain and animals into play. And when we weren't serious, we were laughing - I had a hell of a time. Every day was an adventure in it's own right. And the swamp - Johan, you call it "a special place", and as I quickly came to expect from you, this is just one more area in which you undersold what was coming and then over delivered on all expectations.

Hunting and stalking in that swamp for sable, waterbuck and ESPECIALLY Cape buffalo was INCREDIBLE. I haven't got that excited and had my heart beat so fast since I was 17, but the rest of that story belongs in a magazine, not in an email. The swamp alone was worth the price of admission. Hunting aside, sunrise and sunset in the swamp is unforgettable. I do have to admit you have totally ruined me when it comes to watching Treks across Africa. I usually wind up feeling sorry for those guys - they sure don't have the adventure or fun we did.

My number one objective of the trip was wild sable and I was willing to forgo hunting anything else for at least half the trip just to get a crack at one. Johan you were with me the very first morning of the hunt when I got the opportunity to put the cross hairs on a nice bull sable and promptly got buck fever, left my scope on 2.5 power and missed a 300 yard long, but very doable shot after a perfectly orchestrated stalk by PH Gary. I figured that was probably my only sable opportunity of the hunt and I had blown it. I'm sure in hindsight watching me kick myself repeatedly had to be amusing - you knew how many sable there were in the Concession. But your PH and trackers got me on that same herd twice more, and then the next day onto another large herd, out of which I took my sable (shortly after the Hartebeest). Thank you, I appreciated yours and Gary's patience and insights. Hunting Africa is more than a little different than hunting Alaska, but you guys got me trained up in very short fashion. I quickly learned to trust the judgment and advice you and your PH's had. It wasn't lost on any of us that you guys conferred daily to match up our collective wants and desires with a game plan that delivered them.

The new camp you guys built is phenomenal. Great little bungalows, hot showers on demand, hot, good and plentiful meals, a big fire and cold beer, hell it doesn't get any better. I wasn't expecting anything remotely that nice. I minimize the number of pictures of your camp in my slide show because it quickly becomes evident that we were far from suffering, or roughing it in the wilds of Mozambique. My wife saw the photos and complained to me that I had put us up in hotels that weren't that nice (true) and now she wants to go to Africa next time. You may want to consider building a derelict camp strictly for photo opportunities with future clients to prevent them from having a similar dilemma when they return home. But seriously, a comfortable and clean camp really adds to pleasure of the hunt - and you guys nailed it on your design and delivery.

I have to stop now, otherwise anyone reading this is going to think I am your brother-in-law or part owner. Thank you Johan, Gary, Louie, Koert, Marius and Bahati Adventures. It was one hell of an adventure and the experience of a lifetime.

Like James says, BOPAAH, and I will see you and PH Gary in Reno.
