The greater area has thousands of buffalo. The wilderness is generally doing well and species diversity, game numbers and trophy quality are gradually improving. The area is also unique in its habitat diversity with large rivers, swamps, flood plains, grassy plains and forests - each contributing to the large animal diversity.

Coutada 10 must be one of the only places in the world where you can hunt free ranging, wild Nyala. Sable and Waterbuck herds are ever increasing, as are their trophies.

The pygmy antelope like the Suni, Oribi and the Forest duikers enjoy growing popularity amongst hunters. With lots of natural water, Hippo and Crocodile hunts are something special.

Because of the high rainfall season during the first half of the year, the hunting season in Mozambique is from June to the end of November. Occasional rain may still occur during this period. Due to the relatively short hunting season, one can expect to share the camp with other hunters.

HUNTING IN MOZAMBIQUE WITH BAHATI HUNTING SAFARIS

Our hunting area in Mozambique is a remaining piece of timeless Africa - and a safe and stable destination.  Hunters visiting our area all enjoy top success rates on all species and they typically all get the species they want. That is good.

Mozambique is becoming more popular each year.  The beauty, ruggedness and authenticity of the BAHATI adventure is unique and difficult to explain.

Ask anyone that has been there …

I would love to share our piece of original Africa with you.

THE HUNTING AREA

BAHATI Hunting Safaris holds the concession over Coutada 10, which covers an area of 1,200 square miles (200 000 hectares) of unfenced, wild hunting grounds. The area was formally proclaimed nearly 50 years ago during the time of Portuguese rule.  Before the war, Safari Landia operated the area with such great classic hunters as Wally Johnson, Harry Manners and Robert Ruark visiting the area regularly.

The last company to hunt the area before the long civil war – Safric – described the area as the best for a general bag with Buffalo, Sable, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Eland, Nyala, Reedbuck, Bushbuck, Lion, Leopard, Bush pig, Warthog as well as Blue duiker, Red duiker, Suni and Oribi. There are a few permanent rivers with many Hippo and Crocodile in the area, with the Zambezi river the largest.

The 494,000 acres of wilderness is bordered by about 30 miles of Indian ocean coastline on the south-eastern side. Coutada 10 is situated adjacent to the south-western boundary of the Marromeu Buffalo Reserve.

Around one third of the hunting area is in the greater Zambezi floodplain and depending on the time of year, there could be large patches of swamp and papyrus thickets. You may on occasion see herds of several hundred buffalo in this area.  It is here that most of our buffalo hunting is done.

Hunters navigate the swamps with amphibious vehicles and it could be necessary to sleep in a small satellite "Fly Camp" on one of the wooded islands. The coastline consists of many large bays and the area is beautiful beyond belief.  Later in the season, you will often encounter elephant spoor and the area is also famous for its large forest leopards.

Our area is blessed with herds of animals as it was described in the old days. The region is original, unspoiled and truly unique, offering a large selection of truly free ranging, wild game. It is one of the few places where you can hunt wild game in an unfenced, remote wilderness.

The sight of a few hundred buffalo remains a privilege.
